Anthony Green, VA Funds Theft, Florida 2024

New Port Richey, Florida – In a stark reminder of the consequences for misusing veterans’ benefits, Anthony Green, 71, has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison and 3 years of supervised release for his brazen theft of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) funds.

U.S. District Judge Katheryn Kimball Mizelle imposed the sentence on Green, who pleaded guilty on January 24, 2024. The court also ordered forfeiture of $163,379.76, the proceeds of the crime.

Court documents reveal that Green’s mother, E.G., was receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) from the VA until her death in October 2014. Despite E.G.’s passing, the VA mistakenly continued to issue checks on her behalf. With cunning, Green forged his mother’s signature on these checks and funneled them into an account he controlled.

“This sentence should send a message that the VA Office of Inspector General will vigorously investigate those who would fraudulently exploit VA programs intended to benefit surviving family members of deceased veterans,” stated Special Agent in Charge David Spilker of the VA OIG’s Southeast Field Office. “The VA OIG thanks the US Attorney’s Office and our law enforcement partners for their efforts in this investigation.”

Investigation into Green’s criminal activities was conducted by the Veterans Affairs – Office of the Inspector General, while prosecution was handled by Special Assistant United States Attorney Suzanne Huyler.
