CAMDEN, N.J. – A New York man was just sentenced to 59 months in prison for his role in a massive fentanyl conspiracy, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced.
Edgar Jesus Avila Alvarado, 46, of the Bronx, New York, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of fentanyl, according to court documents.
Back in July 2022, law enforcement caught Alvarado in the act, watching as he exited a residence in New York City with a duffle bag full of nearly 7.4 kilograms of fentanyl. Cops say he was on his way to New Jersey to meet up with another dealer and make a sale.
But instead of getting his fix, Alvarado got a one-way ticket to the slammer. In addition to his prison term, Judge Renée Marie Bumb also sentenced him to three years of supervised release.
U.S. Attorney Sellinger credited the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New York Division with leading the investigation, which was part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation.
The OCDETF is a multi-agency effort that takes down the toughest and most high-level crime organizations threatening the United States. And with Alvarado’s sentence, they’re one step closer to dismantling the fentanyl trade.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Vincent D. Romano represented the government in this case, which was brought as part of the OCDETF/Narcotics Unit in Newark.
