The Newark Police Department is facing allegations of excessive force and discriminatory policing, prompting a high-profile investigation by the Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey.
According to sources, the investigation was launched in May 2011 and has been ongoing for over three years, examining allegations of misuse of force and discriminatory policing practices within the department.
Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Jocelyn Samuels, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman for the District of New Jersey, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable will hold a press conference to announce the results of the investigation.
