Newton Woman Sentenced for Methamphetamine Conspiracy

Angelia Fortenberry, 36, of Newton, Mississippi, has been sentenced to 46 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan III. Fortenberry was indicted as a result of DEA’s ‘Operation Yeti Ice,’ an extensive Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation that targeted illegal narcotics distribution in central Mississippi.

The investigation, which began as a central Mississippi operation, uncovered a drug network that distributed over 100 kilograms of methamphetamine across the states of California and Mississippi. The OCDETF operation was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics with assistance from various local and federal agencies.

The OCDETF program is a joint federal, state, and local cooperative approach to combat drug trafficking. It is the nation’s primary tool for disrupting and dismantling major drug trafficking organizations, targeting national and regional level drug trafficking organizations, and coordinating the necessary law enforcement entities and resources to disrupt or dismantle the targeted criminal organization and seize their assets.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Erin Chalk. The investigation was a result of a collaborative effort between local and federal agencies, including the U.S. Marshal Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, U.S. Postal Service, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation, and several sheriff’s offices and police departments.

Fortenberry’s sentence is a significant blow to the drug trafficking organization, which was involved in the distribution of large quantities of methamphetamine across the country. The sentence sends a strong message that those involved in drug trafficking will face severe consequences.
