Nhial Biliew, Armed Robbery, Iowa 2022

A 24-year-old Denison, Iowa man was sentenced to 17 years in federal prison for his role in an armed robbery at a local country store.

Nhial Biliew, a resident of Denison, Iowa, pleaded guilty to one count of interference with commerce by robbery on an unspecified date prior to his sentencing. The crime took place on June 23, 2020, when Biliew used a gun to rob the Country Store in Denison, Iowa.

Biliew’s lengthy criminal history prior to the armed robbery conviction includes convictions for (1) Interference with Official Acts; (2) Theft, in the 4th Degree; (3) Possession of Drug Paraphernalia; (4) Providing False Identification Information; and (5) Criminal Mischief in the 5th Degree.

On August 4, 2022, United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand sentenced Biliew to 204 months’ imprisonment, which is equivalent to 17 years. In addition to his prison term, Biliew must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after his release from prison.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a violent crime reduction effort led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. PSN focuses on enforcement efforts targeting the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs to reduce crime.

The case was investigated by the Denison, Iowa Police Department, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild prosecuted the case. Nhial Biliew is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
