In a move to foster trust and understanding, community members and law enforcement officials from the tri-county area will convene for the sixth-annual Building Bridges of Understanding in Our Community event on October 21, 2021, at 6:30pm PDT.
The two-hour virtual event, hosted by the Muslim Educational Trust (MET) in Tigard, Oregon, is open to the public and seeks to bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds to discuss public safety. This year’s theme is “What is Public Safety? Joining together to build bridges, share perspectives, and create solutions.”
According to organizers, the event will feature two moderated panel discussions: “What is public safety and what does it mean to you?” and “A year after George Floyd’s murder: Where are we now?” Each panel discussion will include a question-and-answer period. Participating organizations include the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon, the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO), the Washington County District Attorney’s Office, and several law enforcement agencies from the surrounding area.
The Building Bridges event series has been held annually since 2016, with the goal of strengthening trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. The event is sponsored by a coalition of organizations, including the Washington County District Attorney’s Office, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and the City of Lake Oswego.
