BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The grimy streets of West Virginia saw a chilling act as Keith Deshon Adams, 39, of Statesville, North Carolina, pleaded guilty to federal drug charges. Adams admitted to possession with intent to distribute 5 grams or more of methamphetamine and a quantity of fentanyl, substances that would have brought him a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and up to 40 years in prison.
On September 7, 2022, law enforcement came face-to-face with danger during a traffic stop. Adams was a passenger when the vehicle he was in was stopped in Oak Hill. He tried to flee on foot but was apprehended after an officer deployed a taser. During his struggle, Adams opened a cross-body bag, causing fentanyl powder to spill onto the officer and another officer who came to help.
The spilled fentanyl resulted in a tragic turn of events as both officers suffered apparent overdoses, necessitating treatment with naloxone. Adams confessed that the bag contained more than just drugs; it held methamphetamine, fentanyl, and tablets containing both substances.
United States Attorney Will Thompson announced the plea deal, commending the relentless investigative work of law enforcement agencies involved in the case, including the Oak Hill Police Department, Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, DEA, and ATF. The judicial oversight was provided by Senior United States District Judge David A. Faber, with Assistant United States Attorney JC MacCallum leading the prosecution.
Adams is scheduled to face his fate on September 17, 2024, with a potential fine of $5 million hanging over him. His case serves as a stark reminder of the perils and consequences of drug trafficking in our communities.
