LITTLE ROCK—A North Little Rock man, known for his long history of firearm-related crimes, has been sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison for illegally possessing a gun.
Kamron Leemonte Mathis, 27, pleaded guilty on October 11, 2023, to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, a charge that could have landed him in prison for life. United States District Judge James M. Moody, Jr. handed down the sentence, 188 months in the Bureau of Prisons, to be followed by five years of supervised release.
The maximum penalty Mathis faced was not less than 15 years to life in prison and a fine of $250,000. Mathis’ sentence was classified as an armed career criminal, based on the offense, as well as his documented violent criminal history.
Mathis has a prior conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm, as well as convictions for robbery on two different occasions, two counts of aggravated assault, and battery in the first degree. On June 25, 2022, North Little Rock Police Department officers stopped the vehicle Mathis was driving, which had expired registration.
During the search of the vehicle, a 9 mm firearm was found under the driver’s seat, along with two magazines and approximately 24 rounds of ammunition. The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the North Little Rock Police Department.
The United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas, Jonathan D. Ross, announced the sentence, citing Mathis’ prior convictions and history of firearm-related crimes as key factors in the sentence. “Mathis’ sentence reflects the seriousness of his crimes and the need to keep our communities safe from individuals who threaten public safety with firearms,” Ross said.
Mathis will be serving his time in the Bureau of Prisons, with no parole available in the federal system. The defendant’s sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
