New York Attorney General Letitia James has joined forces with a coalition of state attorneys general to fight the federal government’s attempt to deport over 350,000 Haitian immigrants with Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
The coalition filed an amicus brief in support of a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
James argues that ending TPS would put countless families at risk and undermine local communities, which rely heavily on Haitian immigrants’ contributions.
‘Every day, Haitian immigrants contribute immensely to New York,’ said James. ‘This administration’s efforts to strip away their legal status will tear apart our communities and put these families in danger.’
The brief highlights the economic impact of Haitian TPS holders, noting they pay over $140 million annually in state taxes and contribute significantly to the economy. Ending their work authorization would also leave many without employer-sponsored health insurance.
Joining James are attorneys general from 17 other states, including California and Washington, DC, who support continued TPS for Haitian immigrants.
