New York Attorney General Letitia James has launched a scathing attack on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for its deplorable treatment of immigrants detained at 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan.
In a landmark move, AG James filed an amicus brief supporting detainees held at the facility, where ICE is accused of violating the law by holding individuals for days under inhumane conditions. Until June 2025, ICE guidelines capped detentions at 12 hours, but recent reports reveal hundreds have been confined for extended periods.
The lawsuit brought against the federal government describes dozens being held in cramped quarters with limited facilities, lacking beds, proper sanitation, and adequate meals. Medical care is scarce, and family visits are forbidden.
James argues that such treatment is illegal and demands an end to these conditions. She seeks a preliminary injunction ordering the federal government to improve the detentions at 26 Federal Plaza.
The mass arrests of immigrants, including students, small business owners, and workers, have caused severe disruptions in New York City, threatening family livelihoods and city economy. Undocumented immigrants contribute significantly to the local economy through taxes and employment.
Attorney General James emphasizes that detaining individuals in unsafe and inhumane conditions is unacceptable and calls for immediate action from the federal government to rectify this situation.
