NY AG Leads Campaign Against Masked ICE Agents

New York – New York Attorney General Letitia James has led a coalition of 20 attorneys general in demanding Congress pass legislation to stop the routine use of masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during enforcement actions. The group argues such practices threaten public safety, evade accountability, and instill fear in communities.

Attorney General James stated, "It is deeply disturbing that masked agents can pull people off the streets without identifying themselves as law enforcement. Congress needs to ensure transparency and respect for civil rights.”

The coalition details a pattern of ICE agents conducting arrests without revealing their identities or agency, often using unmarked vehicles. They cite concerns over confusion, fear in communities, and obstacles in reporting misconduct. Current federal law requires ICE to identify themselves at the time of arrest, but the group argues current practices are not compliant.

The coalition also highlights safety risks for both individuals apprehended and ICE agents themselves, as well as public intervention risks due to impersonation concerns. They urge passage of legislation such as the “No Secret Police Act” and the “ICE Badge Visibility Act.”

Joining Attorney General James are attorneys general from Arizona, California, Colorado, and other states, including the District of Columbia.

This move comes amid growing public concern over ICE practices and accountability in immigration enforcement across the United States.
