New York Attorney General Letitia James and her counterparts in Connecticut and New Jersey have ordered automatic refunds for Optimum customers who were blocked from accessing MSG Networks channels.
Altice’s Optimum Cable has been charging customers for MSG stations they cannot watch, following a contract dispute between Altice and MSG. The blackouts began in January 2025 and have affected residents across the tri-state area.
In a letter to Altice, Attorney General James demanded refunds for customers who paid for the channels but were unable to access them. ‘New York sports fans are being put in the penalty box,’ said James, calling out Optimum’s practice of charging while denying service.
Attorneys General Tong and Platkin echoed James’ sentiments, urging a swift resolution to the dispute so consumers can again enjoy their paid services.
The blackout affects exclusive coverage of local sports teams like the New York Knicks, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils, and Buffalo Sabres. Attorney General James has previously secured refunds for customers affected by other service disruptions, including SmileDirectClub’s bankruptcy and hotel reservations canceled before a solar eclipse.
This action is part of Attorney General James’ ongoing efforts to protect consumers from unfair billing and service denials.
