WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA – Bolarinwa Salau, 30, of Rockaway Beach, New York, is headed to federal prison for two years after being convicted of identity theft connected to a brazen tax refund fraud scheme. Salau received the 24-month sentence today, a consequence of attempting to steal nearly $1 million from the U.S. Treasury.
The scheme, known as Stolen Identity Refund Fraud (SIRF), relied on pilfered personal information – social security numbers, addresses, and other sensitive data – to file fraudulent tax returns. A routine traffic stop by the West Virginia State Police brought the whole operation crashing down. Troopers discovered a vehicle packed with identification documents belonging to other individuals, directly linking Salau to the fraudulent activity.
Court documents reveal Salau wasn’t just tinkering with a few returns. He attempted to file a massive number of false claims, aiming for a staggering total of almost $1 million in fraudulent refunds. The scope of the scheme suggests a calculated and deliberate attempt to exploit the system and profit from stolen identities.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jarod Douglas relentlessly pursued the case, building a solid prosecution based on the evidence gathered during the traffic stop and subsequent investigation. Douglas presented the case before U.S. District Judge John Preston Bailey, who ultimately handed down the 24-month sentence.
The takedown was a collaborative effort, involving the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigations, the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General, and the diligent work of the West Virginia State Police. Support from the Ohio County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office further solidified the investigation and prosecution. This case demonstrates that attempts to defraud the government will not be tolerated.
Salau’s sentence sends a clear message: stealing identities and attempting to siphon off millions in taxpayer dollars carries significant consequences. While two years is the initial sentence, the fallout from a federal conviction can extend far beyond prison walls, impacting Salau’s future opportunities and reputation.
