Elmostafa Charif, Designer Drug Trafficking, New Jersey 2024

Newark, N.J. – In a stunning revelation from the gritty streets of New York, Elmostafa Charif, 37, from Queens, today confessed to his role in a massive scheme to distribute designer drugs worth over $1 million.

Charif pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Kevin McNulty to two counts of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute the controlled substance analogues NM2201 and 5F-AMB. These substances are eerily similar in structure and effect to Schedule I drugs, like THC.

The DEA has been on the case since February 2011, probing the importation, distribution, and use of synthetic cannabinoids like K2 and Spice. These drugs are derived from damiana leaves, an inert substance, which is sprayed with controlled analogues and flavored for smoking.

According to court documents, Charif, on April 13, 2015, conspired with others to acquire and distribute around 10 kilograms of synthetic cannabinoids. He also admitted buying liquid flavoring and damiana leaves, knowing they would be used to create a product intended for human consumption.

The defendant’s actions have not gone unnoticed; he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million. Sentencing is set for February 22, 2017. The DEA’s Special Agent in Charge Carl J. Kotowski led the investigation that resulted in Charif’s guilty plea.

U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman commended the DEA agents for their diligent work. Assistant U.S. Attorney Melissa Wangenheim represents the government, with defense counsel Aaron Wallenstein, Esq., representing Charif.
