Mount Vernon, NY – In a brazen case of postal abuse, Tameka Babulal, a 41-year-old United States Postal Service (USPS) mail carrier, has been arrested for targeting victims on her mail route in a sophisticated fraud and identity theft scheme.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, Babulal, also known as “Tameka Williams,” “Sharniece Williams,” and “Meek Williams,” stole credit cards, checks, and identities from the mail to carry out a scheme and conspiracy to fraudulently steal money from individuals and financial institutions.
Working together with her husband, Joel Babulal, 39, a/k/a “Joel Nical Babulal,” the couple allegedly used their positions to steal mail, deposit altered checks into personal financial accounts, and coordinate with co-conspirators to obtain the personal identifying information of victims. The investigation, led by the USPS Office of Inspector General and the US Attorney’s Office, uncovered a vast array of evidence, including photographs from Babulal’s cloud storage account, emails, and telephone calls to financial institutions.
Law enforcement officials recovered dozens of credit cards and checks in other people’s names, bundles of undelivered mail, social security cards, and tax documents in other people’s names, and 17 phones, including those allegedly used in the fraud scheme, from the couple’s residence in Hempstead, NY.
“The charges against the defendants reflect this Office’s continued commitment to working with our law enforcement partners to protect the U.S. mail system,” said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams. “When those entrusted to deliver mail abuse their position to corrupt our mail system from within, this Office will hold them responsible for their conduct.”
Tameka Babulal and her husband, Joel, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Judith C. McCarthy this afternoon. The investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding the U.S. mail system and holding accountable those who abuse their positions for personal gain.
