MIAMI, FL – In a shocking case of identity theft, Nydia Nelson, 30, of Miami, pled guilty to computer fraud and aggravated identity theft in connection with an identity theft scheme involving Miami-Dade County Public Schools students’ personal identifying information.
According to court documents, Nelson was one of three defendants who conspired to access the Miami-Dade Public Schools’ Integrated Student Information System (ISIS) database, which contained students’ personal identifying information (PII), including names, dates of birth, and social security numbers.
Nelson, along with co-defendants Pamela Rhim-Grant and Eugene Moss, used the stolen information to file income tax returns seeking fraudulent refunds, which were directed to prepaid debit cards or accounts controlled by Nelson.
Rhim-Grant, a former food service manager at Horace Mann Middle School, had Network Computer access to the ISIS database and was paid $10 per student PII in either cash or gift cards for her role in the scheme.
Approximately 400 students’ PII were fraudulently accessed and used in the scheme, with Nelson facing a maximum of five years in prison for computer fraud and a mandatory term of two years in prison for aggravated identity theft, to run consecutively to any other sentence.
Nelson’s sentencing is scheduled for July 25, 2014, while Rhim-Grant and Moss, who pled guilty on April 29, 2014, are set to be sentenced on July 8, 2014.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank R. Maderal, and the investigative efforts of the FBI, IRS-CI, and the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department were commended by U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer.
