A Haitian citizen, Obanette Jean, 35, has been sentenced to time served for her crimes related to the illegal re-entry into the United States. This case is a stark reminder of the consequences of violating immigration laws.
According to the United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Robert N. Garcia, Acting Chief Patrol Agent, United States Border Patrol, Swanton Sector, Jean was ordered removed from the United States to Haiti on April 1, 2015. However, on October 12, 2017, she departed the United States while the removal order was pending and entered Canada.
Jean was subsequently arrested by a Border Patrol Agent just south of the border after she entered the United States from Canada without inspection approximately one-quarter mile west of the Champlain Port of Entry. She admitted to returning to the United States without permission.
The case against Jean was investigated by Border Patrol and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward P. Grogan. Following the sentencing, Jean was remanded to the custody of the Department of Homeland Security for removal proceedings.
