Ocala Dentist Sentenced to 3 Years in Federal Prison
A local dentist has been sentenced to three years in federal prison after being found guilty of tax evasion. Thomas W. Harter, 49, of Ocala, was sentenced by U.S. Magistrate Judge Philip R. Lammens for six misdemeanor counts of failure to file income tax returns.
According to court documents, Harter worked as a dentist in the Ocala area for approximately twenty years and stopped filing federal income tax returns in the year 2000. Despite earning a gross income of at least $1,709,230 from his dental practice between 2006 and 2011, Harter willfully failed to file a single tax return or pay any income tax during that time period.
The court also ordered Harter to pay $438,384 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), representing the tax loss from his crimes. This case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert E. Bodnar, Jr.
Harter was found guilty by a federal jury on September 17, 2013. The evidence and testimony presented at trial revealed a pattern of deliberate tax evasion by the dentist.
As a result of his crimes, Harter will serve a three-year sentence in federal prison. The sentence is a harsh reminder of the consequences of tax evasion and the importance of complying with tax laws.
The sentencing of Thomas W. Harter serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to evade taxes. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
