OCALA, FL – In a grim turn of events, Juan Mario GonzalezPiloto (40), an Anthony resident, has been slapped with a federal indictment for possession of a firearm and ammunition affecting commerce by a convicted felon. The charge stems from a shooting incident at GonzalezPiloto’s northern Marion County residence on November 28, 2024.
Records show that between 2013 and 2020, GonzalezPiloto has been convicted of five state felonies: cannabis trafficking, possession of a place for drug trafficking, marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana concentrate – hazardous extract, and resisting an officer with violence. His latest misdeed adds to his already lengthy criminal history.
Deputies from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to GonzalezPiloto’s residence after receiving reports of a shooting incident. The defendant told investigators that his firearm had malfunctioned while he was using it, leading to his injury. Under federal law, as a convicted felon, GonzalezPiloto is prohibited from owning or possessing firearms and ammunition.
According to United States Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe, the case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime. Assistant United States Attorney Hannah Nowalk Watson is prosecuting the case.
An indictment merely serves as a formal charge, and GonzalezPiloto is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The investigation into this case is ongoing, with support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
As the gritty reality of GonzalezPiloto’s actions sinks in, it underscores the persistent efforts by law enforcement to crack down on illegal firearm possession and the broader fight against violent crime in our communities.
