Former Gates Mills Postmaster Sentenced to 10 Months in Prison

Ann Apana, 66, of Maple Heights, Ohio, was sentenced to 10 months in prison for her role in a multi-year embezzlement scheme that stole approximately $57,000 from the Gates Mills Post Office.

According to the investigation, Apana, the former postmaster, stole $38,741.42 in money and merchandise from the Postal Service from June 2009 to June 2014. She also made $18,341.08 in unauthorized purchases of postage using customers’ credit card information.

U.S. Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach praised the work of the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General in uncovering the embezzlement scheme. ‘The vast majority of the Postal Service’s 600,000 employees are hardworking, dedicated individuals worthy of the American public’s trust,’ said Dettelbach.

Special Agent Monica Weyler of the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General emphasized the severity of the crime. ‘Unfortunately, a small few decide to take advantage of that trust and steal from their employer and customers. Today’s sentence shows that special agents work diligently to identify those few individuals, and seek their prosecution and removal from employment.’

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Miranda E. Dugi, following an investigation by special agents of the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General.

Apana was previously found guilty on one count of theft of property used by the U.S. Postal Service. She was ordered to repay the stolen funds and will serve 10 months in prison. The sentence sends a clear message to those who seek to take advantage of their position and steal from their employer.

The U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General remains committed to identifying and prosecuting individuals who engage in similar crimes. The public can report suspicious activity to the agency’s hotline at [insert number].
