Riley Griffy, Machinegun Conversion, Nebraska 2021

A 29-year-old Omaha man, Riley Griffy, has been sentenced to 57 months of imprisonment for unlawfully possessing a machinegun, which he created using a 3D printer.

According to the federal court in Omaha, Griffy sold a 3D printed conversion device on April 15, 2021, which converted a semiautomatic Glock pistol into an automatic weapon. He continued manufacturing machineguns until his arrest on June 2, 2021.

Griffy manufactured and sold nine machineguns and one silencer, in total. This crime demonstrates the dangers of unregulated 3D printing and the ease with which individuals can create deadly weapons.

U.S. Attorney Jan Sharp announced the sentencing, which was handed down by Chief United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr. Griffy will also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after completing his imprisonment term.

The investigation into Griffy’s activities was a collaborative effort by the Omaha Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. This case was part of Project Safe Neighborhood, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone.

Project Safe Neighborhood was reinvigorated by the DOJ in 2017 as part of their renewed focus on targeting violent criminals. The program brings together law enforcement and the local community to develop effective strategies to reduce violent crime.

The sentencing of Riley Griffy sends a strong message that the manufacture and sale of machineguns will not be tolerated. It is a reminder of the importance of strict gun control laws and the need for increased regulation of 3D printing technology.
