GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Robert Hielscher, a 36-year-old active military employee from Opelika, Alabama, was handed a 60-month sentence for committing a heinous act of domestic violence resulting in substantial bodily injury. United States Attorney Michael J. Moore for the Middle District of Georgia announced the sentence on Thursday, December 19, 2013.
The assault took place on April 28, 2013, at Ft. Benning, Georgia, where Hielscher admitted to repeatedly assaulting his victim with his hands and fists in front of their two-year-old child. He further confessed to using a knife to cut the victim during the attack. The judge presiding over the case was Honorable Clay D. Land, United States District Court Judge in Columbus, Georgia.
Hielscher entered a plea of guilty on August 14, 2013, and the charges against him were investigated by the Ft. Benning Criminal Investigation Division and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Crawford Seals prosecuted the case with vigor.
