Operation Legend Yields 2000+ Arrests, Guns and Drugs Seized in Chi…

CHICAGO, IL – Federal agents are flooding the streets, and the numbers are starting to tell a story. Attorney General William P. Barr, speaking from Chicago today, detailed the ongoing results of Operation Legend, a multi-city crackdown on violent crime launched in the wake of the tragic shooting death of four-year-old LeGend Taliferro in Kansas City. The operation, while a somber response to a child’s death, is undeniably making waves – and racking up arrests.

Since its July 8th launch, Operation Legend has resulted in over 2,000 arrests across multiple states, with 588 defendants facing federal charges. The ATF has pulled 587 firearms off the streets, alongside over 1.2 kilos of heroin and more than 5 kilos of methamphetamine. The DEA’s haul is even larger: nearly 70 kilos of methamphetamine, 16+ kilos of heroin, 7+ kilos of fentanyl, 12+ kilos of cocaine, 268 firearms, and a staggering $5.19 million in illicit drug proceeds. The FBI and US Marshals are contributing significantly, recovering 241 and 169 weapons respectively, with the Marshals also logging 1810 arrests – including 163 for homicide and 120 for sexual assault.

The impact is clearest in Chicago. Barr highlighted a 49% decrease in homicides during the first four weeks of Operation Legend, compared to the four weeks prior. Chicago, which saw a worrying climb in fatal shootings between April and July 2020, experienced a sharp decline in August, coinciding with the increased federal presence. While correlation isn’t causation, the timing is striking. The operation expanded rapidly from its initial launch in Kansas City, Missouri, to include Albuquerque on July 22nd, Cleveland, Detroit, and Milwaukee on July 29th, St. Louis and Memphis on August 6th, and Indianapolis on August 14th.

Here’s a breakdown of the federal charges by city. In Milwaukee, WI, 16 defendants have been charged – 2 with narcotics-related offenses, 12 with firearms violations, and 2 with other violent crimes. Kansas City, MO, has seen 113 federal charges: 34 for narcotics, 68 for firearms, and 11 for other violent offenses. Chicago itself is facing 120 federal defendants: 31 narcotics-related, 85 firearms-related, and 4 charged with other violent crimes. Albuquerque, NM, has 45 defendants facing federal charges (17 narcotics, 22 firearms, 6 other violent). Cleveland, OH, has 66 (41 narcotics, 22 firearms, 3 other). Detroit, MI, has 58 (29 narcotics, 26 firearms, 3 other).

The operation doesn’t stop there. St. Louis, MO, has seen 123 federal defendants charged, broken down as 54 narcotics, 53 firearms, and 11 other violent crimes. These aren’t just numbers on a page; these are individuals facing serious consequences for their actions, and a clear signal that federal law enforcement is taking a hard line against violent crime in these cities. While the long-term effects of Operation Legend remain to be seen, the initial results suggest a significant disruption to criminal activity.
