Orane Nelson, Double Murder, New York 2013

A Bronx Man’s Brutal Double Murder Conviction: Justice Served, But at What Cost?

In a shocking turn of events, Orane Nelson, aka ‘Amaze,’ was convicted of two counts of murder in the first degree, conspiracy to distribute narcotics, and firearms charges in connection with the January 16, 2013, double murder of Jennifer Rivera and her cousin Jason Rivera in the Bronx, New York. The gruesome crime left the community reeling and raised questions about the senseless brutality of the act.

According to court papers and evidence, Nelson, a crack dealer in the Bronx, had a dispute with Jason Rivera over a drug debt owed by Nelson. In a heinous act of violence, Nelson lured Jason Rivera to a location in the Bronx with the promise of money to be paid for the debt, but instead shot him in the head at close range, along with his 20-year-old cousin Jennifer Rivera, who was an innocent bystander. Nelson’s accomplice was also involved in the execution-style killings.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara stated, ‘Orane Nelson executed two people in cold blood over a drug debt. He killed Jason Rivera over a drug debt, and Jennifer Rivera – a 20-year-old college student who had nothing to do with that drug debt – just because she was there.’

Nelson’s conviction is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and NYPD, who worked tirelessly to bring the perpetrator to justice. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of drug-related violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.

As Nelson awaits sentencing on June 23, 2017, the community can take solace in the knowledge that justice will be served. However, the question remains: can we prevent such senseless acts of violence from occurring in the future?

The case is being prosecuted by the Office’s Violent and Organized Crime Unit, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jared Lenow and Jessica Feinstein at the helm. The maximum potential sentences in this case are prescribed by Congress and are provided here for informational purposes only, as any sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the judge.
