New Bedford Seafood Manager Pleads Guilty to Tax Evasion
Boston, Massachusetts – In a shocking turn of events, Orlando Cardoso, 44, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, has pleaded guilty to two counts of filing a false income tax return.
According to court documents, Cardoso swore on his 2012 and 2013 tax returns that the only income he had received was from his employer. However, it was revealed that Cardoso had received over $75,000 in cash and checks from his employer’s supplier and failed to report the income on his tax returns.
The charge of filing a false income tax return provides for a sentence of no greater than three years in prison, one year of supervised release and a fine of $100,000. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
Cardoso, who has been a seafood manager in New Bedford, is scheduled to be sentenced on March 8, 2018. The announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney William D. Weinreb and Joel P. Garland, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigations in Boston.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen P. Heymann of Weinreb’s Economic Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case. Cardoso’s actions have raised questions about the transparency and accountability of seafood managers in the industry.
The case highlights the importance of accurate tax reporting and the consequences of failing to do so. It serves as a reminder that tax evasion is a serious crime that can result in severe penalties.
Cardoso’s guilty plea marks a significant development in the case, and it is expected that he will face the full force of the law.
