James Gibson, Access Device Fraud, Ohio 2012

Orlando, FL – A pair of alleged fraudsters have been hit with a four-count indictment for their role in a $5,000 shopping spree at Beachwood Place and Golden Gate, according to the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.

James Gibson, 31, from Orlando, Florida, and Lansford Beuns, 29, from Newport News, Virginia, are accused of conspiracy to commit access device fraud, use of unauthorized access devices, possession of 15 or more counterfeit access devices, and possession of device-making equipment.

The grand jury alleges that in December 2012, Gibson and Beuns fraudulently obtained approximately 55 credit cards. They are said to have used an encoder and embosser to re-code the account information on these cards before using them to rack up thousands at local merchants.

Among their high-profile purchases were items from Abercrombie & Fitch, The Buckle, Saks Fifth Avenue, True Religion Jeans, and Best Buy. The total value of these transactions exceeded $5,000.

Assistant United States Attorney Margaret A. Sweeney is handling the prosecution of this case, which was investigated by the United States Secret Service. An indictment does not prove guilt; it merely charges a crime.

Should they be convicted, the sentences for Gibson and Beuns will be determined by the court based on various factors, including their roles in the offense and any prior criminal records. Sentences are capped at the statutory maximum but often result in less severe penalties.
