Orlando Man Jailed for Gun Violence

An Orlando man has been sentenced to 3 years and 10 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, the Grimy Times has learned. Leo Joshua Nieves-Ramirez, 24, was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Judge Wendy W. Berger on charges of firearm possession.

Nieves-Ramirez had pleaded guilty on May 28, 2021, and was subsequently arrested on January 5, 2021. He is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition due to multiple prior felony convictions.

According to court records and testimony, FBI agents had been monitoring Nieves-Ramirez’s Instagram page, where they observed several photographs and videos showcasing him displaying firearms and ammunition. In one photo, Nieves-Ramirez was seen holding a Glock .40 caliber pistol with an extended magazine and an ‘Auto Sear’ attached to the rear of the firearm.

In a disturbing video, Nieves-Ramirez was seen pointing and firing what appeared to be the same pistol out of an open front passenger side window in ‘automatic mode’ to a backdrop of numerous tractor trailers. The investigation also revealed that the firearm used in the video had been reported as stolen.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant United States Attorney Beatriz Gonzalez prosecuting the case. It is being prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program.

Project Safe Neighborhoods is an evidence-based program aimed at reducing violent crime through a comprehensive strategy that involves law enforcement, community stakeholders, and prevention and reentry programs. The program focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based programs to achieve lasting reductions in crime.

Nieves-Ramirez will also have to forfeit a SCCY 9mm pistol and 7 rounds of ammunition, which were involved in or used in the offense. His sentencing is a significant blow to those involved in gun violence and serves as a reminder of the consequences of such actions.

The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
