New Mexico Man Sentenced to 24 Months in Prison for Assault with a Deadly Weapon
A Dulce man has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for assault with a dangerous weapon following a violent domestic incident.
Orlyn Vigil, 49, an enrolled member of the Jicarilla Apache Nation, pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon. There is no parole in the federal system.
According to court documents, on November 16, 2021, Jicarilla Apache Police responded to a report of domestic violence at a residence within the Jicarilla Apache Nation. Upon arrival, officers found an adult female victim visibly distressed and injured. Officers observed fresh abrasions and other signs of physical harm.
The investigation revealed that an argument between Vigil and the victim escalated into violence. Vigil physically assaulted the victim, including strangling, dragging, and throwing her to the ground. As the victim attempted to leave the area, Vigil struck her with a vehicle, causing further injury.
‘This sentence is a reminder that violence will not be tolerated within our community,’ said U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison. ‘We will continue to work tirelessly to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.’
The Jicarilla Apache Police Department investigated this case. Assistant United States Attorneys Mia Ulibarri-Rubin and Nicholas J. Marshall are prosecuting the case.
Upon his release from prison, Vigil will be subject to three years of supervised release. Vigil’s sentence serves as a warning to those who engage in violent behavior: the law will be enforced, and justice will be served.
This case is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies working together to keep our communities safe.
