Queens Business Owner Pleads Guilty to Tax Fraud
The grim reality of tax evasion has reared its head in Queens, New York, with the former owner of a drywall business pleading guilty to helping prepare a false corporate tax return for his business.
Osvaldo Caceres, of Queens, New York, owned and operated OSVI Drywall Corporation, a business that is now at the center of a tax fraud scandal. According to court documents, Caceres helped prepare the company’s corporate tax return for the tax period ranging from February 1, 2013, through January 31, 2014, which underreported the business’s gross receipts.
The underreported gross receipts resulted in a total tax loss to the IRS of $926,379. This staggering loss is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of tax evasion and the importance of honesty in tax reporting.
Caceres faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison, as well as a period of supervised release, restitution and monetary penalties. Sentencing is scheduled for June 14, and a federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg of the Justice Department’s Tax Division made the announcement, thanking the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York for providing substantial assistance in this matter.
The IRS-Criminal Investigation is investigating the case, and Trial Attorneys Sarah Ranney and Sam Bean of the Tax Division are prosecuting the case. This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of tax evasion and the importance of honesty in tax reporting.
In a statement, the Tax Division reaffirmed its commitment to investigating and prosecuting tax evasion cases, saying, ‘We will continue to work tirelessly to hold those who engage in tax evasion accountable for their actions.’
