Bowling Green, KY – The grim tale of Shai Chance Sheriff’s alleged descent into the heart of Kentucky’s drug trade took a darker turn on April 10, 2024. A federal grand jury in Bowling Green indicted the 24-year-old from Owensboro for trafficking fentanyl and illegal firearm offenses.
According to the charges, on March 19, 2023, Sheriff was caught with 40 grams or more of a fentanyl mixture, intending to distribute it. He also had two firearms—a Smith & Wesson .40-caliber pistol and a Glock .45-caliber semiautomatic—both used in furtherance of his drug trafficking activities. His possession of the firearm as a convicted felon was an added offense.
Shai Chance Sheriff’s criminal record dates back to June 28, 2019, when he was convicted of robbery in the second degree in Daviess Circuit Court. The defendant faced last week’s arraignment before a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the Western District of Kentucky, where he was ordered detained pending trial.
Should Sheriff be found guilty, he faces up to life imprisonment. Assistant U.S. Attorney R. Nicholas Rabold will lead the prosecution against him.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across the nation. It underscores the federal government’s commitment to eradicating drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession that imperil our communities.
As with all criminal cases, Shai Chance Sheriff is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
