Ozark Man Pleads Guilty to Assaulting Postal Carrier

In a disturbing display of aggression, 55-year-old Peter Harrington of Ozark, Missouri, pleaded guilty to assaulting a postal carrier who was simply doing his job on December 4, 2020.

According to court documents, Harrington charged at the postal carrier, who was stopped at an assisted living facility, and began hitting and striking him repeatedly in the head. The carrier attempted to protect himself by covering up and retreating to his mail truck, but Harrington continued his assault until the carrier handed over his mail.

When the carrier gave Harrington his mail, the defendant became angry that he only received one envelope and verbally berated the postal worker, who was left with bloody abrasions and contusions on his ears, face, and the back of his left hand.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Ozark, Mo., Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Carney is prosecuting the case, which carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison without parole.

A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office. The court will determine Harrington’s sentence based on advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors.

The violent assault on a postal worker is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who work in the mail industry. We hope that Harrington receives a severe sentence for his actions and that the postal carrier receives the support and care he needs to recover from this traumatic experience.
