Los Zetas Arms Traffickers Caught in Texas

In a major blow to the notorious Los Zetas drug trafficking organization, three key players have been convicted of conspiring to export arms from the United States to Mexico.

According to the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation, Pablo Cerda, Nicolas Sanchez-Reyes, and Obregon were identified as co-conspirators in the Dallas area who were tasked with receiving a shipment of weapons in Laredo and arranging for their transportation to Mexico.

On November 9, 2010, agents set up surveillance at a Wal-Mart parking lot near I-35 in Lancaster, where they observed a tractor-trailer driver meet with Ranferi and Otilio Osorio, who were to deliver two large duffel bags believed to contain weapons. The bags were later found to contain 40 high-powered firearms, including rifles and handguns, with 37 of them having obliterated serial numbers.

Co-defendants Otilo and Ranferi Osorio, who were associated with the Dallas area, had already pleaded guilty and been sentenced. The three remaining defendants, Cerda, Sanchez-Reyes, and Obregon, are currently in custody and will remain so until their sentencing on March 27, 2013.

The OCDETF investigation was conducted by the DEA and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Lou Castillo is prosecuting the case.

The conviction of these Los Zetas associates marks a significant victory in the ongoing fight against arms trafficking and organized crime in the United States and Mexico.

As the Grimy Times continues to expose the dark underbelly of organized crime, our readers are reminded that the war on arms trafficking is far from over.
