Savannah, GA – In a shocking case of labor trafficking and murder, Pablo Rangel-Rubio, a 53-year-old Mexican national residing in Rincon, Georgia, has pleaded guilty to a multi-million-dollar conspiracy to harbor and shield illegal aliens, committing money laundering, and aiding and abetting the retaliation against a witness, resulting in a 50-year prison sentence.
According to court documents, Rangel-Rubio, along with his co-conspirators, employed at least 100 illegal aliens to work for a tree service, skimming from their paychecks and further enriching himself. The scheme, which netted the conspirators over $3.5 million, also led to the murder of Eliud Montoya, a naturalized citizen employee who reported the scheme to the authorities.
Rangel-Rubio admitted to aiding and abetting Montoya’s retaliatory murder, which took place on August 17, 2017, near Montoya’s home in Garden City, Georgia.
The investigation, led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the FBI, revealed that Rangel-Rubio provided the illegal aliens with assumed identities, social security numbers, and concealed their unlawful status, earning him the nickname ‘human trafficker.’
David H. Estes, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, stated, ‘Pablo Rangel-Rubio was responsible for employing at least 100 illegal aliens to work for a tree service, skimming from their paychecks to further fatten his wallet, and then helping arrange the murder of a man who exposed the scheme.’
Rangel-Rubio faces a 50-year prison sentence and forfeiture of a 26.62-acre residential compound in Rincon, Georgia. The case serves as a reminder of the gravity of labor trafficking and the consequences of exploiting vulnerable individuals for financial gain.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has commended the bravery of Eliud Montoya and the dedication of law enforcement agencies for their tireless efforts in bringing Rangel-Rubio to justice.
Rangel-Rubio’s guilty plea and subsequent sentence mark a significant victory for the victims of labor trafficking and a warning to those who seek to exploit the vulnerable for financial gain.
