Michael Williams, Methamphetamine Trafficking, IL 2024

Pana, Illinois, man Michael Williams, 49, is facing federal charges tied to a significant methamphetamine trafficking operation and illegal firearm possession. A federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging Williams with distributing 50 grams or more of ice methamphetamine and possessing firearms in furtherance of drug crimes.

The indictment stems from events on January 24 and January 26, 2018. Williams allegedly distributed a large quantity of ice methamphetamine on the first date and was later found in possession of more than 50 grams of the drug with intent to distribute. The charges were initially filed via criminal complaint following his arrest on January 26, 2018.

On January 29, U.S. Magistrate Judge Tom Schanzle-Haskins ordered Williams held without bond, directing the U.S. Marshals Service to maintain custody. The decision came after prosecutors argued Williams posed a danger to the community and a flight risk due to the severity of the charges and evidence.

During a search of Williams’ residence on January 26, law enforcement seized six firearms: a .38 caliber revolver, two 12 gauge shotguns, a .40 caliber carbine, a .223 rifle, and a .17 caliber long rifle. These weapons were allegedly used to protect and further his drug operation, triggering the additional federal firearm charges.

If convicted, Williams faces a statutory penalty of 10 years to life in prison for the methamphetamine charges alone. The firearm count carries a mandatory five-year sentence, which must be served consecutively to any sentence imposed for the drug-related convictions—effectively guaranteeing a decade behind bars at minimum.

The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Central Illinois Enforcement Group (CIEG), with assistance from the Pana Police Department, Christian County Sheriff’s Office, and ATF during the search warrant execution. Assistant U.S. Attorney Crystal Correa is prosecuting. As with all federal cases, Williams is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
