LOS ANGELES – A federal grand jury has indicted Jacob Daniel Terrazas, 30, of Paramount, for assaulting a Border Patrol officer during an immigration protest that turned violent. The Justice Department announced the charges today.
Terrazas is accused of throwing chunks of cinderblock at the officer on June 7th, causing injury and requiring medical attention. He is scheduled to face trial on September 23rd.
‘We will not stand by while our brave federal agents and officers get hurt,’ said Acting United States Attorney Bill Essayli. ‘If you injure an official enforcing immigration law, you may serve 20 years in a federal prison cell. It’s just not worth it.’
The protest near a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) facility escalated when Terrazas and others threw hard objects at federal agents. He was seen using a shield and cover to repeatedly throw cinderblock remnants, one of which struck an officer in the left shin, causing bleeding.
Despite his injury, the officer returned to duty after realizing he could still stand. Another agent was hit by rocks but remained uninjured. Terrazas was eventually detained, identified, and arrested following the incident.
An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed to be innocent until and unless proven guilty in court. If convicted, Terrazas would face a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. HSI is investigating the case, with Assistant United States Attorneys Eric Mackie and Brenda Galván prosecuting.
