GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: In a stunning move against drug trafficking, Michael A. Austin, 34, and Chavone Burnett, 32, both residents of Parma, Ohio, have been hit with a five-count indictment for running a sprawling heroin distribution operation.
The duo faces charges including conspiracy, possession with intent to distribute heroin, and maintaining properties for the unlawful manufacturing, storage, and use of heroin. According to officials, Austin used his apartment at 5556 Broadview Road as a front, while Burnett helped store and distribute drugs from another location on West 50th Street.
Indictments state that Austin, with Burnett’s aid, sourced heroin from distributors across Cleveland, planning to distribute the drug in April 2014. Prosecutors are now aiming for the forfeiture of $11,243 in cash seized from their properties.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Parma Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), marking a significant victory for law enforcement in the fight against drug trafficking.
Assistant United States Attorneys Christian Stickan and Special Assistant United States Attorney Margaret Tomaro are handling the case. Sentencing will depend on various factors, including the defendants’ prior records, their roles, and the nature of the offense.
Despite the charges being an indication of guilt, it is crucial to remember that Austin and Burnett are entitled to a fair trial where the government must prove their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
