Parrionte H. Wallace, Gun Possession, Illinois 2023

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Parrionte H. Wallace, 22, of Springfield, Illinois, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 41 months for illegally possessing a loaded firearm. The sentencing, handed down August 1st by U.S. District Judge Colleen R. Lawless, reflects a growing federal crackdown on repeat offenders and gun crime in the Central District of Illinois.

The case unfolded June 23, 2022, when Menard County Sheriff’s deputies pulled over Wallace while he was driving in Menard County. A search of the vehicle revealed a semi-automatic handgun with an extended magazine – and a single round chambered. Wallace admitted to purchasing the weapon illegally in Chicago, adding another layer of complexity to the case and highlighting the flow of illegal guns across state lines.

Judge Lawless didn’t pull punches at sentencing. She specifically noted that the weapon Wallace possessed was stolen, loaded, and found at 12:30 a.m. while he was driving with a young child in the vehicle. Crucially, the judge also determined Wallace’s prior conviction constituted a crime of violence, escalating the severity of the penalty. Wallace was indicted by a federal grand jury in July 2022 and ultimately pleaded guilty in March 2023 before Magistrate Judge Karen L. McNaught.

While Wallace received 41 months, the maximum sentence could have been considerably longer. At the time of the offense, possessing a firearm as a felon carried a penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. However, just days after Wallace’s crime, Congress passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, increasing the maximum sentence to 15 years – a stark reminder of the evolving legal landscape surrounding gun control.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Illinois State Police, Menard County Sheriff’s Office, and the Athens Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah E. Seberger prosecuted the case, emphasizing the government’s commitment to removing dangerous individuals and firearms from the streets. This case is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program focused on reducing violent crime and gun violence through coordinated law enforcement and community engagement.

PSN, recently strengthened under the DOJ’s violent crime reduction strategy, prioritizes building trust with communities, supporting local violence prevention organizations, and focusing enforcement efforts on the most dangerous offenders. While the program’s long-term effectiveness remains a subject of debate, the Wallace sentencing serves as a clear signal that federal authorities are actively pursuing gun crime cases and holding convicted felons accountable for their actions.
