Miami-Dade County Resident Pleads Guilty to Identity Theft Tax Fraud Scheme

A 23-year-old Miami-Dade County resident, Patrick Exilhome, has pleaded guilty to participating in an identity theft tax fraud scheme.

According to court documents, law enforcement responded to a hotel and observed Exilhome and three others smoking marijuana. The individuals were asked to leave the hotel, and while doing so, a female from the group requested to retrieve her purse from a hotel room. Officers accompanied her to the room and discovered a computer, papers containing names, dates of birth, and social security numbers, and debit cards in other people’s names.

The officers obtained a search warrant and seized the computer, 131 forms of personal identification information, and 16 credit/debit cards in other people’s names. A forensic analysis revealed 30 ‘recently used’ websites for tax filings and access to debit/credit cards. The analysis also showed that Exilhome’s prints were on the computer and papers containing personal identification information.

Exilhome is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Kathleen M. Williams on July 16, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. At sentencing, Exilhome faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for the access devices charge, and a mandatory term of 2 years in prison, consecutive to any other term in prison, for the aggravated identity theft charge.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida commended the investigative efforts of the IRS-CI and the Aventura Police Department. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brooke C. Watson.
