Bangor, Maine – In a shocking turn of events, Patrick M. Curley, 50, of Passaic, New Jersey, has been convicted of extortion in a Maine court.
The crime, which took place in March 2010, involved Curley applying for a job with Vescom, a Hampden, Maine-based security firm. After meeting with the company’s Senior Vice President for a job interview in New York, Curley expressed ongoing interest in the position via e-mails and a voice message.
However, on April 27, 2010, Curley sent an e-mail to the Senior Vice President falsely accusing her of sexual harassment and discrimination, and threatened to sue. In the months that followed, both Curley and an attorney representing him contacted Vescom employees and staff counsel, threatening to take the claims to the media if they could not reach a financial settlement.
Courtesy of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Curley’s claims of sexual harassment and discrimination were found to be false and were intended to extort money from Vescom.
As a result of the conviction, Curley faces up to two years in prison and a $250,000 fine, or both. He will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office.
Assistant United States Attorney Gail Fisk Malone is available to comment on the case. You can reach her at (207) 945-0373.
The case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of extortion and the importance of protecting oneself from false accusations.
