New Jersey Man Pleads Guilty to Extortion
A 50-year-old man from New Jersey has been convicted of extortion in Maine after threatening a security firm with false claims of harassment and discrimination.
Patrick M. Curley, of Passaic, New Jersey, was indicted on March 21, 2013, and was sentenced to up to two years in prison and a $250,000 fine, or both.
Curley applied for a job with Vescom, a Hampden, Maine-based security firm, in March 2010. He met with Vescom’s Senior Vice President for a job interview in New York and expressed ongoing interest in the job through e-mails and a voice message.
However, on April 27, 2010, Curley e-mailed Vescom’s Senior Vice President and falsely accused her of sexual harassment and discrimination, and threatened to sue. He followed up with threats to sue and take his claims to the media if he could not reach a financial settlement.
Curley’s claims of sexual harassment and discrimination were false and were intended to extort money from Vescom. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Curley will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office. Assistant United States Attorney Gail Fisk Malone can be reached at (207) 945-0373 for further information.
