Alice Chu, a 64-year-old rheumatologist from Fort Lee, New Jersey, has been convicted of defrauding Medicare and other health insurance programs out of millions of dollars.
According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Chu billed Medicare and other health insurance programs for expensive infusion medication that her practice never purchased. She also fraudulently billed millions of dollars for allergy services that patients never needed or received.
Chu, who owned and operated a rheumatology practice in Clifton, New Jersey, was convicted of one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and five counts of health care fraud.
The maximum penalty for each count is 10 years in prison. Chu is scheduled to be sentenced on July 14.
The FBI, Health and Human Service Office of the Inspector General (HHS-OIG), and Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DOD-OIG) investigated the case.
Acting Assistant Chief Rebecca Yuan and Trial Attorney Nicholas Peone of the Justice Department’s Fraud Section are prosecuting the case.
Alice Chu, 64, of Fort Lee, New Jersey, faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for each of the six counts. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
