Methamphetamine Trafficking Plagues Randolph County
ELKINS, WEST VIRGINIA – A sinister plot to distribute methamphetamine has been uncovered in Randolph County, with two residents facing serious charges.
Patsy Meredith DeMary, 41, and Scott Jackson Hamrick, 38, also known as ‘Basic,’ were indicted by a federal grand jury on February 20, 2019, on drug distribution and firearms charges, announced United States Attorney Bill Powell.
DeMary and Hamrick are accused of conspiring with each other to distribute methamphetamine in Randolph County during the Spring of 2017.
The indictment charges DeMary and Hamrick with one count of ‘Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine,’ one count of ‘Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine,’ and one count of ‘Possess a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime.’
Both defendants face a minimum of five years and up to 40 years incarceration, along with a fine of up to $5,000,000 for the conspiracy count, up to 20 years incarceration and a fine of up to $1,000,000 for the distribution count, and at least five years incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000 for the firearms count.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime through a collaborative effort between federal and local agencies.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen D. Warner is prosecuting the cases on behalf of the government, with the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives, the Mountain Region Drug & Violent Crime Task Force, the Greater Harrison Drug & Violent Crime Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative, the West Virginia State Police, Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, the Buckhannon Police Department, and the Weston Police Department contributing to the investigation.
The investigation was funded by the federal Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Program (OCDETF), which provides critical federal funding and coordination for successful identification, investigation, and prosecution of major interstate and international drug trafficking organizations.
An indictment is merely an accusation, with DeMary and Hamrick presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
