Paul Wollweber, Sex Abuse, New Mexico 2023

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A disturbing case of abuse of power by a detention center officer has come to light, leaving a trail of trauma for a female inmate.

Paul Wollweber, 41, an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Acoma, was convicted of sexual abuse after an investigation by agents of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Southern Pueblos District.

According to the plea agreement, on August 29, 2015, while working as a detention center officer at the Acoma Detention Facility, Wollweber committed abusive sexual contact against a female inmate.

The details of the abuse are shocking: Wollweber touched the victim’s chest and continued to place his hands around her lower back and under her clothes. He also forced the victim to engage in kissing. The victim pushed Wollweber away to stop him from kissing and grabbing her.

The Acoma Detention Facility is located on the Pueblo of Acoma, Indian Country. This egregious abuse of power by a detention center officer has sent shockwaves through the community.

Wollweber pleaded guilty on October 28, 2019. On February 25, 2023, he was sentenced in federal court to eight months at a halfway house. In addition to his sentence, Wollweber will also be required to register as a sex offender.
