Peter Papuchis, Child Enticement, Florida 2023

JACKSONVILLE, FL – In a grim turn of justice, Peter Papuchis, 43, from Norfolk, Virginia, was today sentenced to 11 years and 3 months in federal prison for his chilling attempt to entice a minor into sexual activity. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Wendy W. Berger, also mandates a 20-year term of supervised release post-prison, along with sex offender registration.

Papuchis entered a guilty plea on February 21, 2024, following his arrest on May 4, 2023. The case unfolded as a federal agent using an undercover persona in online chats, posing as the parent of an 11-year-old girl, lured Papuchis into conversation. His sinister intentions were revealed when he confessed, “I’m a perv with pedo tendencies.”

Over a period of several days, Papuchis engaged in graphic conversations detailing his desire to meet the child and engage in sexual activity. He even provided his username for another chat application where they continued their exchanges until April 23, 2023. On that day, Papuchis traveled to St. Johns County to meet the “parent” of the child, only to be arrested after arriving at the prearranged meeting location.

This harrowing case was investigated by the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant United States Attorney Ashley Washington leading the prosecution.

The sentencing of Papuchis is another victory under Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse. For more information on this crucial initiative, visit www.justice.gov/psc.
