Convicted Couple to Serve Federal Prison Time

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A South Texas couple, Pedro Candelaria, 24, of Pharr, and Cynthia Marez, 31, of McAllen, have been handed significant sentences following their convictions of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, announced U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson. Candelaria pleaded guilty on June 4, 2015, and Marez pleaded guilty on March 5, 2015.

Today, U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos sentenced Candelaria to 156 months in federal prison, while Marez was ordered to serve a 84-month-term of imprisonment. Both were also ordered to serve five years of supervised release following their sentences. The investigation revealed that the couple was involved in a serious crime that could have devastating effects on the community.

The investigation led to the discovery of 2.2 kilograms of methamphetamine with a purity level of 97% strapped to Marez’s body during an inspection at the Falfurrias checkpoint in January 2015. Candelaria was arrested in connection with the investigation. The methamphetamine was found in vacuum-sealed bags strapped to Marez’s body.

Candelaria and Marez have been in federal custody since their arrests and will remain in custody to serve their sentences at a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be designated in the near future. The convictions stem from an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and Border Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lance Watt is prosecuting the case.
