MADISON, WIS. – A Mexican citizen has been sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States. Pedro Pineda-Acosta, 38, was living in Madison when he was sentenced by U.S. District Judge James Peterson on today by U.S. District Judge James Peterson.
Pineda-Acosta pleaded guilty to this charge on January 18, 2019. According to court documents, he was previously deported and removed from the United States in December 2014.
While this was the defendant’s first immigration conviction, Judge Peterson was concerned with the defendant’s substantial criminal history which included several violent offenses. This history was taken into account during the sentencing process.
The charge against Pineda-Acosta was the result of an investigation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman.
