BROWNSVILLE, Texas – A staggering 253.2 kilograms of liquid meth, hidden inside an auxiliary gas tank, led to the downfall of Pedro Rodriguez III, a 45-year-old San Benito resident. His conviction of possession with intent to distribute liquid meth resulted in a severe punishment, announced U.S. Attorney Jennifer B. Lowery.
Pedro Rodriguez III pleaded guilty on July 14, to the crime. The evidence against him was overwhelming, as law enforcement discovered the massive quantity of narcotics during a routine traffic stop on January 11. Rodriguez had switched lanes without signaling, prompting the stop.
Further investigation revealed that Rodriguez had several pending state arrest warrants, and he was subsequently taken into custody. Upon searching his vehicle, authorities found the liquid meth inside the auxiliary gas tank. Rodriguez admitted to knowing about the meth and had agreed to transport it from South Texas to Dallas.
The court took into consideration Rodriguez’s extensive criminal history while handing down the sentence. On February 22, U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera ordered Rodriguez to serve 120 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
Rodriguez will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility, to be determined in the near future. The Drug Enforcement Administration conducted the investigation with the assistance of the San Benito Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Edgardo J. Rodriguez prosecuted the case.
