Perry Woman Sentenced for Hydrocodone Theft

Bangor, ME – Tonia Smith, a 42-year-old woman from Perry, Maine, has been sentenced to four months in prison and three years of supervised release for her involvement in a scheme to steal pain medication and commit food stamp fraud.

According to court records, Smith used her position as a pharmacy technician at the Indian Health Service Center on Pleasant Point Reservation in Perry to steal Hydrocodone from the pharmacy between July and November 2013. She then shredded records to conceal her thefts.

Furthermore, an investigation revealed that Smith purchased EBT cards from food stamp recipients for amounts less than the credit assigned to each card and then used the cards to make unauthorized purchases between January and November 2013.

The investigation was conducted by the Offices of Inspector General of the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture, as well as the Pleasant Point Police Department.

Assistant United States Attorney Jim Moore stated that Smith’s actions were a betrayal of the public’s trust and a serious crime.

Smith was ordered to pay $3,933.88 in restitution as part of her sentence. She pled guilty to the charges on November 18, 2014.

United States Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II announced Smith’s sentence, emphasizing the seriousness of her crimes and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions.
