Phan Faces 10 Years for Gun Charge

In a shocking turn of events, 27-year-old Sarunn N. Phan of Providence has pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. The conviction carries a statutory sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison.

According to court documents, Phan was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison and 3 years supervised release in June 2011 for the same offense. However, it appears Phan failed to learn from his past mistakes.

On April 9, 2014, Providence Police responded to shots fired in the vicinity of Oakland and Dickens Street. Upon arrival, officers found 11 .9mm shell casings on the ground and a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the area. About an hour later, officers observed the same vehicle at Douglas Avenue and Eaton Street, where they conducted a traffic stop.

During the stop, officers noticed a large black box being tossed into the rear cargo area. Upon inspecting the vehicle, they found an open box containing a firearm in the rear cargo area. Additionally, officers discovered a .9mm handgun with an empty magazine, a black plastic bag with 10 .380mm rounds, and a Glock 40 caliber magazine with 8 rounds of ammunition.

Phan initially claimed the vehicle and its contents belonged to him, stating it was for self-defense after being shot at earlier in the evening. However, the evidence suggests otherwise. Phan has been detained since his arrest and faces a consecutive sentence of up to 2 years in prison for violating federal supervised release.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted Providence Police in the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard W. Rose is prosecuting the case. Phan is set to be sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Mary M. Lisi on May 7, 2015.
