Phila Tax Scammer Pleads Guilty
Philadelphia tax preparer Jean Coq pleaded guilty yesterday to assisting in the preparation of false federal tax returns, swindling the IRS out of $83,451.
According to court documents, Coq, of Philadelphia, prepared tax returns for clients for tax years 2013 and 2014 that claimed inflated itemized deductions and adjustments to income. As a result, Coq’s clients sought tax refunds to which they were not entitled.
Coq’s scheme has left taxpayers wondering how they can trust their tax preparers. ‘It’s a stark reminder that tax preparers have a serious responsibility to act with honesty and integrity,’ said a tax expert.
Coq is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 10 and faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison on each count, as well as a period of supervised release, restitution, and monetary penalties.
The case was investigated by the IRS-Criminal Investigation and is being prosecuted by Trial Attorney Ann Marie Cherry of the Tax Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Ignall of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg of the Tax Division and Acting U.S. Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania made the announcement.
Coq’s guilty plea is a major victory for taxpayers and a reminder that tax crimes will not be tolerated. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
